Families and Children

The Explorer Trail

Armed with backpacks and spyglasses, children can follow the free Explorer's Trail at Manchester Cathedral as part of a family day out over the school holidays or at weekends.

Children will be able to find the fire bird, the Angel Stone, the mythical carved creatures under the seats and the two kangaroos carved on the bishop's chair as they follow the trail that takes them all round the Cathedral. They can also discover what is special about the tower, the High Altar, the Regiment Chapel and the beautiful stained glass windows.

As children explore the Cathedral, there are fun activities to complete along the way. These include colouring in the St George's window, doing a dot to dot to reveal the Angel Stone, completing the word search and designing their own mythical creature. Children can light a candle and say a prayer before they leave.

Children will be provided with a rucksack full of fun activities designed primarily for the 7-11 age groups. Explorers will find out about the cathedral as they follow the trail, and on completion of the activities receive a small prize.

Activity packs will usually be available between 10am and 1pm and 2pm and 4pm most days and guides or vergers will usually be on hand to offer a warm welcome to parents and grandparents who bring children along.

Please note: Before making a special journey, please check on visitor opening times or by telephoning the Cathedral on 0161 833 2220.
