Manchester Cathedral is pleased to host a free talk on Sir Edward Watkin - Manchester's forgotten star.

Manchester Cathedral - Regimental Chapel

Tuesday 17th May

11.00 am - 12.00 pm

Sir Edward Watkin MP, who lived and died in Northenden, was one of the best known Victorians but is now largely, unaccountably forgotten. Nicknamed 'Nimble Ned' because of his amazing mental and physical energy, his achievements - and his failures - were on an epic scale. His Channel Tunnel of 1880, his Eiffel Tower, his part in creating Canada and his work in Manchester to relieve the conditions of the poorest members of the town are just part of the Watkin Story. And he had the last laugh 70 years after his death.

Geoff Scargill, the chair of The Watkin Society and author of a recently-published book 'Victoria's Railway King', will be revealing the fascinating details in the life of one of Manchester's forgotten stars.
