There has been a place of worship on the site of Manchester Cathedral since 632, as a witness to the redemptive and inclusive love of Jesus Christ. The Cathedral building has seen many changes in its time and, as a result, reflects the history of the Christian faith in this city. The Cathedral is an integral part of the wider community, as is reflected in our music and worship of God. Latterly, it has also been used for a wide variety of other events, which have attracted a different audience to the Cathedral.
While the Cathedral is open 365 days a year, and is much used for private prayer and devotion, there are severe limitations on what we can offer. The current building was last extensively restored in the 1950s following the Second World War and, as a result, work is now required to replace our under-floor heating, which has come to the end of its lifespan. This work will begin after Easter 2013 and we hope to return to a much warmer nave in November this year.
The entire nave floor will be replaced as part of this project, and our fundraising will include an invitation to individuals and organisations to sponsor a tile for £10.00. You can do this in two ways:
a) Visit the Cathedral on the Street (located beside the West door of Manchester Cathedral), write down your name, or the name of the person or organisation you wish to dedicate the tile to and place your £10.00 gift in a Manchester Cathedral Development Project gift-aid envelope. Please also write the name of the person or organisation to whom the tile is dedicated on the envelope.
b) Send a £10.00 donation (cheques made payable to Manchester Cathedral Development Trust) to the Director of Fundraising and Development at Manchester Cathedral. On receipt, an unallocated tile will be allocated to you.
When the project ends, a virtual map of the floor plan will be uploaded to our website. The tile sponsorship will be recorded in a permanent list, which will be available online and kept as part of the Cathedral’s rich archives
