Manchester Cathedral is rightly known as one of the most alive and buzzing places in the city. But from now on this spiritual heart of the city will buzz to a different tune, as we get our first beehive - on the roof!
This is the first of four hives to be located on the huge flat roof of the building. Commenting on the initiative, Canon Adrian Rhodes, Cathedral Chaplain and a beekeeper himself, said, "This is a small but exciting symbol of the Church's commitment to the regeneration of the city, as a good and vibrant place to live. Bees flourish in cities, where they find excellent foraging in parks and gardens, and along canals and railway lines".
The initiative will be supported by the Manchester and District Beekeepers' Association, with their Apiary Manager, Lena Crowe, acting as mentor to the project. Cathedral Volunteers will train up as beekeepers and will also be involved in honey preparation and marketing.
