On Saturday 15 December, over 900 people took a break from Christmas shopping to attend Manchester Cathedral’s annual Christmas Carol sing-along. The sing-along was free to attend but shoppers generously donated to Christian Aid on the way out, raising almost £800 to support some of the world’s poorest communities.
Christian Aid and Manchester Cathedral partnered together to foster peacemaking around the world by supporting Christian Aid’s festive fundraising appeal highlighting families affected by conflict across the world.
Launched this month, the charity’s ‘Be A Peacemaker’ appeal will help support its work with children and adults who are suffering from trauma, homelessness, poverty and other effects of war and violence.
The money will help people like Hassan, who has spent his life in refugee camps. He now receives support from one of Christian Aid’s partner organisations. Through counselling, therapy and social activities, they have helped him to heal from trauma and he is now slowly recovering from his experiences.
The Sub Dean, Canon Dr David Holgate said:
“Our Christmas Carols Singalong for shoppers, is one of the most enjoyable—and informal—events in our pre-Christmas programme. There is something about singing carols together that really lifts the mind and heart. We were glad to make this also an opportunity to support the work of Christian Aid”.
