On Monday 30th May two ‘passion’ parades will take place in the centre of Manchester.
Manchester United will parade down Deansgate, to celebrate their football victories, at 10am, and at 11.45am there will be an act of worship in Albert Square. After this thousands of people from Manchester and Salford churches will march the Annual Whit Walk to Manchester Cathedral with a special welcome from Bishops and Cathedral clergy.
The procession will consist of Manchester Cathedral, churches and community groups. It will be led by the Lord Mayor and Mayoress of Manchester and the Mayor of Salford, along with the Dean and the Bishop of Bolton.
The Dean of Manchester Cathedral, Rogers Govender, said “Two great processions on the same day. One for those passionate about football and one for those passionate about God. And if you are passionate about both or want to give thanks then come to the service in Albert Square which is open to all.”
The Manchester Whit Walk began in 1801 and from it the Whit Walks spread to many Lancashire towns. The Whit Walk’s origins lay in a celebration of the Sunday School Movement. Sunday Schools made a great impact on the lives of many children, especially in working class areas.
