The clergy from Manchester Cathedral will be in Manchester Arndale on Maundy Thursday between 11.00 am and 12.00 noon, for a unique initiative to shine the shoes of the public.
Although the initiative will allow the public some ‘sole’ searching and may also result in helping the public ‘heal’ their everyday worries by talking to clergy, the quirky idea has a serious message aiming to emulate Jesus washing the feet of his followers 2000 years ago and the subsequent tradition of the clergy washing parishioners feet on the Thursday before Easter for centuries. The shoe-shine event is a modern twist on this tradition, and it is the sixth year that the event has taken place.
The Sub Dean, Canon Philip Barratt says “We are very grateful to David Allinson, Centre Director of Manchester Arndale, for allowing us to shine shoes again this year. On this day in the Cathedral, we remember Jesus washing the feet of his disciples as a reminder that he came to service. We follow this call to humbly serve the needs of others, not just at Easter but throughout the year.”
So if you’re shopping in Manchester Arndale this Thursday morning, make sure you head over to the shoe shine in Halle Square and allow the Cathedral clergy to polish your shoes!
