Manchester Cathedral Voluntary Choir recently visited Tewkesbury. The Sub-Organist, Geoffrey Woollatt, talks about the trip.
"This year's Voluntary Choir tour to Tewkesbury was a great success. The staff at Tewkesbury Abbey were very welcoming, and very complimentary about the singing. On the Saturday, we sang Evensong for the feast of the Beheading of John the Baptist, with old favourites, Brewer in D (who was Organist down the road at Gloucester Cathedral), and Give us the wings of faith by Ernest Bullock, who was one of my predecessors as Sub-Organist at Manchester between 1912-1919.
It was an early start the next day for the Eucharist, and we had some lovely solo singing in Darke in F. Finally we sang Evensong on Sunday, culminating in the singing of the Te Deum in G by Vaughan Williams, composed for the Enthronement of Cosmo Lang, Archbishop of Canterbury, in 1928.
The tour was rounded off by a delicious last meal at My Great Grandfather's restaurant - a must if you are ever in Tewkesbury.
Huge thanks must go to the members of the Voluntary Choir who assisted in organising the tour (Sophie Bohme & Helen Butcher for organising all the meals, and Bella Grinstead for organising the accommodation), Aaron Shilson, who played the organ superbly, and all the Voluntary Choir supporters and extra singers.
We hope to see everyone again (and perhaps some new faces) on the tour to Norwich next year".
