Manchester Cathedral is pleased to announce the relaunch of Manchester Children’s Choir. Manchester Children’s Choir was founded in 1920s by composer Sir Hamilton Harty, who had the aim to make choral music and singing accessible to all children of Manchester and Salford, regardless of ability or background.
Following in his footsteps, Chorister Recruitment Officer, Charlie Corkin is doing something very similar. Launching on Saturday 7 May, Manchester Children’s Choir will be open to all children between the ages of six and eleven and there will be no fees to be a member. Manchester Cathedral is proud to be an inclusive community and children of all faiths and backgrounds are welcome to join.
The Choir will sing a wide range repertoire from Beethoven to The Beatles and everything in between. The choir runs on a Saturday morning from 10am – 11:30am and is free to all members.
Charlie said “Manchester Cathedral is a community for all people from every walk of life. One of the best ways to get people connected is through music, and singing. We hope to attract children and families of all faiths and backgrounds to come and learn to sing with Manchester Children’s Choir, but also to have a really fun time too!”
The original Manchester Children’s Choir was famous for their recording of Purcell’s Nymphs and Shepherds with the Hallé Orchestra which sold over one million copies, however the choir soon disbanded after the outbreak of World War II. We look forward to welcoming many children from our diverse city to the Cathedral for this exciting launch!
