Our 2023 season of free coffee concerts and organs recitals

We are thrilled announce a new season of free coffee concerts and organ recitals for spring and summer 2023. 

Manchester Cathedral's Saturday Coffee Concerts offer some of the free best concerts in the city, with talented musicians performing in a beautiful and friendly setting and followed by complimentary cakes and refreshments.

The Saturday Coffee Concerts series is as follows: 
 
-    March 18 at 11am – Joseph Dawson - Cello 

Joseph has been a finalist of the RNCM's annual Concerto competition and Barbirolli competition, as well a recipient of scholarships from Help Musicians UK and the RNCM itself. 
Last year Joseph was awarded the RNCM's Hirsch Chamber Music Award along with violinist Riley Court-Wood for their performance of Kodály's Duo for Violin and Cello.

-    April 22 at 11am – Harry Lai - Piano

Originating from Hong Kong, Harry Lai is currently studying for a Master of Performance degree in piano at the Royal Northern College of Music. As a fervent keyboardist, he has performed as a soloist, orchestral keyboardist and repetiteur. Harry is an enthusiastic chamber musician and has recently received the Avril Coleridge-Taylor Second Prize in the Williams-Howard Prize 2023. 

-    May 13 at 11am – Ellie Wood - Harp 

Ellie has performed in a number of different venues including the Bridgewater Hall, Whitworth Hall, the Princess Hall and The Lowry Hotel, as a soloist, a member of RNCM Symphony Orchestra and as part of the Lumiere Duo with fellow RNCM violinist Ellie Marks. Some highlights so far include playing under the baton of Halle Orchestra conductor Sir Mark Elder, and joining the Manchester University Symphony Orchestra in a performance of Bernstein’s Chichester Psalms.

10 June 10 at 11am – Ravi Nathwani - guitar

Ravi Nathwani is an exciting young British Asian guitarist currently in the first year of his Master’s degree at the Royal Northern College of Music, studying with internationally renowned guitarist Craig Ogden. An accomplished chamber musician, Ravi was a member of the National Youth Guitar Ensemble, London Camerata from 2017 to 2018. Ravi currently has three duo collaborations: with violin, soprano and guitar. He has also performed with choirs, in guitar ensemble, with cellists and singers. Ravi is a strong advocate of new music and has an ongoing commitment to both performing contemporary music and to the commissioning of new pieces involving guitar.

- 1 July at 11am - Genesis Trombones 

Comprised of students from the Royal Northern College of Music, Genesis Trombones are a new and burgeoning quartet based in Manchester. Formed in 2021, Genesis Trombones - aka Freddie Hughes, Toby Marshall, Oliver Webb and Asa Riley - are already beginning to establish themselves as a serious chamber group with a diverse performance portfolio. The group pride themselves on performing an eclectic range of repertoire, from classical to jazz to contemporary to showcase to audiences the versatility and virtuosity a trombone quartet is capable of.

- 8 July at 11am - RNCM Songsters 

The RNCM Songsters are a specially selected group of singers and pianists from the RNCM who are passionate about the performance of song. They perform bespoke and innovative recital programmes of song at events within the college, and have performed for many music societies across the United Kingdom, as well as a number of leading festivals of song, including Leeds Lieder and Manchester Song Festival. They are led by Artistic Director Jonathan Fisher.   

 

Our Sunday Organ Promenade Recitals give the opportunity to hear some of the best concert organists from around the UK performing popular organ music during relaxing Sunday afternoon concerts.
