The Dean of Manchester and Bishop of Manchester Elect lay the first stone of the new Cathedral floor

On Friday 27 September, the Dean of Manchester and the Bishop of Manchester elect, the Right Reverend David Walker, laid the first stone of the new Cathedral floor.

The stone was laid in the newly established baptistry, near the south entrance of the Cathedral.

Manchester Cathedral has been in the hands of contractors since April, whilst we install a new green heating system. The new geothermal heating system uses natural energy stored in Manchester’s warm earth to heat the cathedral, making it perhaps the “greenest” Cathedral in the country.

This project has meant that the entire floor is being replaced with new stone from Cumbria. The Cathedral will be beautifully warm - not all at once, since the system needs time to bed in. But we look forward to a warm cathedral for many years to come.
