The Manchester Academy of Fine Arts exhibition, The Meditation of Drawing

The Manchester Academy of Fine Arts exhibition, The Meditation of Drawing Opens in new window Opens in new window , is now open to visitors at Manchester Cathedral.

This free to access exhibition features the work of 45 artists, each with their own approaches to drawing, which will be displayed around our Nave and Chapter House.

The title of the exhibition was inspired by Henri Cartier-Bresson’s quote: "Photography is an immediate reaction; drawing is a meditation”.

The Manchester Academy of Fine Arts hopes this exhibition generates awareness of the positive aspects of drawing. It can improve memory and relieve stress by forcing us to focus our attention on drawing the subject from memory or on the object or environment in front of us.

A catalogue, which can be downloaded via QR code at the exhibition, accompanies the works with essays by Professor Tim Brennan, Julia Midgley and John Hewitt. The essays examine how drawing is a meditation of the world around us.

The exhibition runs until 22 October 2023.

*Please note visitors may beunable to access the exhibition when the Nave is being used for services and external events.
